Raaz 3 (also known as Raaz 3: The Third Dimension) (English: Secret 3) is a Bollywood horror thriller film directed by Vikram Bhatt, and produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt.[3] The movie features Bipasha Basu , Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta as main characters. The film is the third installment in the Raaz series, being a sequel to Raaz: The Mystery Continues, which itself was a sequel to Raaz which starred Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea. Bipasha Basu who was a part of the first film of the Raaz series, has made a comeback to the series after opting out of the second film. It was one of the films in a series of quasi-sequels released under the Bhatt Banner including Raaz: The Mystery Continues, Murder 2, Jannat 2, Jism 2, 1920: Evil Returns, Murder 3 and Aashiqui 2, each of which had nothing to do with their respective prequels, but somehow fell into the same genre following a similar story.

The film released on 7 September 2012 with paid previews on 6 September 2012 to mixed reception while Basu's role was highly praised by critics. The film garnered overwhelming box office collections and was declared a "Super Hit" at the box office. It emerged as a major commercial success in India and is the highest-grossing film in the Raaz trilogy as well as the highest grossing Hindi horror film ever. The film is also the first 3D super hit of India and the second highest-grossing film of Vishesh Films. It was also called a 3D Blockbuster in the Indian media. The film is also currently the highest-grossing film of Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta, beating Murder 2 and Jannat 2, respectively.[citation needed]

Plot
The story revolves around Shanaya (Bipasha Basu), an actress at the height of her success. She gets offered the best roles and wins all the awards she is nominated for. In addition, she also has a passionate affair with a handsome director named Aditya (Emraan Hashmi). This all ends when a younger actress, Sanjana (Esha Gupta) makes her film debut. In place of Shanaya, Sanjana comes into spotlight and begins to snatch away her awards. Suddenly, Shanaya seems forgotten and everybody only wants to work with Sanjana. Soon enough, Shanaya sees her career fading away and her envy slowly becomes craziness. She begins to turn to black magic and makes it her goal in life to destroy Sanjana's career and make her the pain of loss.

She seeks help of her uncle sonu (Sunil Dhariwal), a tantrik who helps her to practice black magic and calls upon an evil entity, Tara Dutt (Manish Chowdhary). She asks him to make Sanjana's life a living hell. Tara agrees to help haunt and torture Sanjana until she becomes suicidal. He asks Shanaya to give her a black poison through a person she trusts. Shanaya seduces Aditya to do it for her and whenever he feels guilty, she makes him accept again. Aditya, whose sympathy for Sanjana has turned into love, leaves Shanaya and refuses to listen her any more. Now Shanaya must work on her own to defeat the power of love.

Somehow, to try to end Aditya and Sanjana's love triangle, Shanaya hatches a plan by befriending Sanjana in order to poison her which Aditya gets suspicious about. At a movie premiere, Shanaya reveals that she actually hid the poison in the chocolate basket she gave to Sanjana earlier. In the bathroom, Sanjana is attacked by a swarm of moths which she takes of her dress and run nude in public, Aditya takes her to the Hospital and finds out that Shanaya was behind this. Shanaya takes control of other mens bodies but they get brutally beaten up by Aditya. Go, get ready to be spooked!" Bollywood3 awarded it 3.25/5 stars and wrote," On the whole, Raaz 3 is one movie which has everything going its way. Gritty screenplay, awesome songs and mature performances are sure shot plus points. On the other hand it would be interesting to see how family audience, who love watching popcorn entertainment respond to this film. To those who love edge of the seat horror thrillers, Raaz 3 is one film which is highly recommended. Go buy yourself a ticket and experience the thrill in 3D." Madhureeta Mukherjee of The Times Of India gave it 3/5 stars while writing, "For all those who want to move over from the Ramsay Bros... go watch 'Raaz 3' in 3D, at your own risk. But don't take it to your grave." Ananya Bhattacharya of Zee News gave it 3/5 stars and stated that"Watch 'Raaz 3' for Bipasha and its 3D factor."Independent Bollywood gave 3 out of 5 stars and quoted "Some real original scares and chills this time with memorable performances." IBNLive also gave it 3/5 stars calling it a good horror film.[citation needed]

Subhash K. Jha of IANS gave 2 out of 5 stars saying, "It's Bipasha who holds together the feverish proceedings. She delivers a full-bodied gutsy performance." Udita Jhunjhunwala of businessofcinema.com said, "Bhatt gets the rhythm of the suspense-building wrong, going all too rapidly from grotesque decapitation to a kiss and song scene. It does not help that the acting is also at different levels. Most of the burden to convince rests on Basu's fit shoulders – and she does. You do believe that she is menacing and wicked." [9]

Plot
Former principal Dean Yogendra Vashisht (Rishi Kapoor) has aged and fallen ill. His desire is to see the students from his last batch, who were part of the student-of-the-year competition. Some former students arrive and talk about their regrets from ten years ago in college. They hold themselves responsible for the lively Dean having falling ill. The film then goes into a flashback set ten years back at the college.

Rohan introduces Shanaya to Abhimanyu, warning Abhimanyu not to get involved with her romantically.

Abhimanyu is invited to Rohan's elder brother's destination wedding in Thailand, which Shanaya and other rich family friends are attending as well. In Thailand, Shanaya sees Tanya and Rohan flirting again and gets even more upset when Rohan is rude to her and sides with Tanya. Abhimanyu tells her that they can teach Rohan to respect his girlfriend. At a party, Shanaya openly flirts with Abhimanyu, attempting to make Rohan jealous. The plan works but Rohan discovers she did this to get him back on track.

On the wedding day, Rohan apologizes to her and is easily forgiven while Abhimanyu realizes that he truly loves Shanaya. They head back to India, where the "Student Of The Year" competition, which determines the best well-rounded student, commences. Abhimanyu realizes that Shanaya is a distraction, as he wants to focus on the competition. His grandmother falls sick and eventually dies; Shanaya stands by him during this difficult time. Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, the first three debutantes ever to star in a Karan Johar directorial
On 5 January 2011, Karan Johar uploaded the first look poster of the new film on the micro-blogging website Twitter.[7] Student of the Year marks the debuts of Alia Bhatt, the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, the son of director David Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Boman Irani's son Kayoze Irani and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai fame Sana Saeed (role of "Anjali" as the daughter of Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji).

Malhotra and Dhawan had previously worked as assistant directors under Johar during the making of the 2010 film My Name Is Khan.[8] Rishi Kapoor played a gay dean.

The first official trailer was released on 2 August 2012. Karan Johar later tweeted saying that the film will be released on 19 October 2012.[9]

Filming
On 16 August 2011, director Karan Johar took the Mahurat shot and Mumbai socialite Parmeshwar Godrej rolled the cameras.[10] Some parts of the movie were shot in Kashmir and Dehradun (Forest Research Institute, Dehradun).[11] The external view of the school was taken from Kasiga School Dehradun, whose name was changed to St. Teresa. Rob Miller of ReelSports, who had worked with Shahrukh Khan on Chak De! India, was hired to direct the sports action in Student of the Year.

Marketing
The film targeted viewers with contest-based marketing. Stressing 'competition' which would make up for a significant part of the movie, contests such as the 'Nano Student of the Year', 'The Buddy of the Year' and 'FedEx International Student of the Year' were launched targeting students across the country.

Tata Motors, on-ground promotion partner for the movie, launched the 'Nano Student of the Year' contest for all college students in India.[12] In the first round students were judged on four parameters; namely, academics, culture, sports and social life. The top eight finalists would compete for the 'Nano Student of the Year' title.[13] The contest was held across India in mid-September 2012.

The production house partnered with FedEx Express announcing a special 'FedEx Student Offer' and launch of 'FedEx International Student of the Year' campaign. It was aimed at individuals in India applying for higher education abroad. Student of the Year was promoted across non-fiction properties such as Kaun Banega Crorepati on Sony Entertainment Television and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Bigg Boss on Colors. Radio stations such as Red FM, Radio City, Big FM were used for the promotion of the film and its music.[14]

Post-release box office
Critics were apprehensive of the success of the film as several hyped movies have flopped over the years. Also, the movie had a very high price tag and newcomers starred in the movie.[17] However, the film took a thunderous start at the box office, becoming the biggest non-starcast opener ever in Bollywood.[18] The movie surpassed trade expectations and caused profit to both makers and distributors in the first week itself. It remained the highest grossing non-starcast film in Bollywood until its record was broken by Aashiqui 2.[19]
